We are a not-for-profit, charity run café based in the heart of Cheltenham. We are owned and operated by The Nelson Trust, a charity that works with people who are affected by addiction and those who have experienced multiple disadvantage. We have created an environment where people can enjoy themselves, eat great food and relax, without the pressure to buy alcohol. In the daytime, we offer brunch and lunch, served every day until 3pm, and in the evenings we will be hosting events in our large upstairs space.

We have a great, family and pet-friendly space where children and dogs are welcome. We have a courtyard to enjoy the nice weather and disabled access to the ground floor.

When you arrive, you’re greeted by a mix of paid staff, working alongside volunteers, some of whom are in recovery. Through volunteering they gain skills and qualifications to help them towards gaining employment. So when you enjoy a good meal or pop in to buy a coffee at The Sober Parrot, you are also supporting the Hub Enterprises to work with individuals overcoming addictions, trauma and disadvantage. With your support change really is possible.

“At Commercial and the Commercial Foundation, we’re always keen to support fellow Gloucestershire social enterprises. As a result, we chose to switch our catering to The Nelson Trust and Sober Parrot in January 2022.

The fine work done by The Nelson Trust in supporting the long-term recovery of people whose lives have been torn apart by addiction and trauma has many parallels with that of the Commercial Foundation.

We are united in our desire to empower, support and encourage people to overcome tough times and find purpose, develop new skills and a discover a brighter future.

The Nelson Trust and Sober Parrot have provided us with some outstanding vegan buffets throughout Veganuary, reducing the impact on the environment while still delivering delicious food.

We will be continuing to support The Nelson Trust and Sober Parrott, throughout 2022 and beyond.”

      A merry, alcohol-free Christmas

      Date: 3 Dec 2021

The Mayor of Cheltenham, Councillor Steve Harvey, joined staff at The Sober Parrot and members of the business community to launch a month of festive activities at The Sober Parrot on Wednesday 1st December.

The Sober Parrot is a not-for-profit cafe run by The Nelson Trust, a registered charity that brings belief, hope and long-term recovery to people whose lives have been torn apart by addiction and the multiple and complex needs that come with it.

The Christmas Tree lights were turned on by the Trust’s Chair of Trustees, Dame Janet Trotter. Special guests included representatives from Cheltenham BNI, Circle to Success, Cheltenham Chamber of Commerce, Meet, Connect & Refer, and Cheltenham Business Improvement District.

Kirsty Day, Head of Recovery at The Nelson Trust said, “We are so happy to be open to the public once again and have a special festive menu at the café this month. We are also pleased to be partnering with local businesses in Cheltenham to bring some much-needed Christmas cheer to families and individuals who may be facing adversity over Christmas. We are running some Christmas craft workshops for people we have been honoured to have helped with meals during the Covid pandemic through various projects including #FeedCheltenham.”

      Activities during December include:

      • Christmas craft workshops for our and clients of partner charities such as CCP and Feed Cheltenham.
      • Christmas market and storytime by Mrs Christmas on Saturday 4 & 11 December.
      • An evening for business networkers on 9 December
      • The Recovery Community Christmas party on 18 December

Please come and visit The Sober Parrot at St James Square, Cheltenham. All funds raised go towards helping local people in recovery from addiction or women in our community with multiple complex needs.

      Sober October

      Date: 8 Oct 2019

Anyone planning on doing Sober October has been invited in to try out one of our Sober Parrot special mocktails.  Izzy our Deputy Manager has created some new refreshing delights such as Passion Fruit Sunrise, Apple and Elderflower Mojito, Cherry Bomb (which you can choose to have sweet or sour), Coco Colada and she has used Gunrz to make up a zingy Ginger Fizz.

For those of you who would prefer something more close to the real deal – we have a 0% Prosecco which goes very nicely with a dash of raspberry.  Or you can even choose one of our alcohol free stouts, ales and beers – all 0%.  You don’t have to feel like you are missing out if you are doing Sober October.  Come along and let us know what you think?  We love to hear your reviews, comments and feedback.  You may even have a seasonal mocktail you would like to share with us.

We wish you all well on your challenge and hope that you are feeling the wellbeing benefits from being booze free!

Welcoming in our New Manager Sam

      Date: 19 Sep 2019

We welcomed in our new Manager, Sam Tribe here at The Sober Parrot during the summer.  He has been a great addition to the team and has brought a wealth of catering experience, bags of enthusiasm and a real passion for getting involved in a social enterprise like ours.  We are very lucky to have him!

Sam has plans for a new Autumn menu (equally as delicious as our previous menu), ideas on how to get the word out about our training room and hopes to have more evening events for you all to enjoy!  If you haven’t met him yet, why not pop in to say “Hi!” and introduce yourself.  We ALL love to meet our friends and supporters.

Keep up to date on our events and posts by following us on social media.  We still have our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages and always love getting reviews on Trip Advisor.

Welcoming this month, Rusty Goàt the Poet first hit the spoken-word scene on the 14th February 2017 and since then has gone on to headlining and feature at numerous nights across the country, brandishing hard-hitting personal poetry born from lived experience. His poetry approaches his demons head-on and he admits that poetry and the spoken-word scene have been the best therapy.

        About The Hub Enterprises

We are group of community enterprises developed by The Nelson Trust. We work with those in their recovery and the wider community to teach and develop skills to help individuals back into long term employment.

Many of our team are in long term recovery and we believe that with the right help and support change is possible, we also aim to reduce the stigma attached to past lives and we want to make positive recovery visible in our communities.

Every year hundreds of addicts in Gloucestershire look for help and support to begin their recovery journey, but many more find services completely inaccessible and have given up trying. We hold the hope and prove that change and lifelong recovery can be achieved, and is being achieved every day.
